Download Router
A browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that sorts each download into the right subfolder, by file type or by your own rules. It collects nothing.

What it does
Download Router saves every download into a subfolder of your Downloads folder (documents, images, archives, installers and so on) according to rules you set. A toolbar popup shows the 30 most recent sorted files and opens the folder.
How it’s built
- One Manifest V3 source tree, built into separate Chrome and Firefox packages by a small Node build script.
- Chrome: uses
downloads.onDeterminingFilenameto pick the path before the file is written, so nothing is downloaded twice. - Firefox: has no such hook. The extension starts a second download of the same URL into the target folder, waits until it is actually receiving the same content, and only then cancels and removes the original. If the site refuses the second request (one-time links, form posts, expired tokens), the original download is left alone.
- Activity-log writes are serialized so that parallel downloads can’t overwrite each other.
- The rule engine has unit tests, and the Firefox flow is tested with a simulated browser, using
node --test.
Privacy
There’s no server, no account, no analytics and no tracking. Rules and recent activity stay in the browser’s local extension storage. Read the privacy policy.
